Navigating the Professoriate

2011-12

The Navigating the Professoriate program fosters professional development of early career, tenure-track/-eligible women faculty in STEM fields (including medicine) at Northwestern University and The University of Chicago.  The program aims to prepare our early career women faculty for success as investigators, mentors, leaders, and educators by promoting professional skills related to running a research program, people management, and collaboration—all skills that are essential to career advancement and leadership.  Through offerings in Grantsmanship, Mentoring and Laboratory Management, Teaching, Negotiation Skills, Networking, and the Promotion and Tenure Process, the Navigating the Professoriate program offers a diverse cohort of pre-tenure women the tools and resources to thrive and excel.  In addition to new skill development, the sessions facilitate development of cross-disciplinary peer networks, opening doors for future opportunities.  A dinner with senior women faculty in the STEM fields closes the program; this venue will facilitate interactions between senior and junior colleagues in and outside of individual fields.  Presenters and panelists for the program are drawn from a pool of Northwestern and University of Chicago faculty in science and engineering, education, and management.
